March Madness - March Update

Tuesday, March 10, 2020 6:25 AM

Welcome to March! Thank you to all of you for coming to our sharing assembly. The kids were super pumped about it and the feedback we got back was fantastic and meant so much to the kids. Here’s a quick run down of what we have coming up and what we’ve been up to lately.

Important Dates

Thursday, March 19th – Spirit Day (80’s) and Fun Lunch (A&W)

Thursday, March 19th – Last day of school before springbreak

Thursday, March 19th – Student Led Conferences 4:30pm – 7:30pm

Friday, March 20th – Student Led Conferences 8:00am – 12:30pm

Monday, March 30th – Back to school

Conferences

This round of conferences is Student Led. We hope that you and your child are able to attend conferences together, so they can show you all the lovely work that is being done. As with last year, they will be open hour blocks that multiple families can sign up for at the same time. This probably means that there will be other people in the classroom while you are there. Please remember to register as we look forward to sharing our learning. Should you wish to have a more private conversation, we can arrange that but please reach out to me and we’ll make it happen.

Language Arts

We have started a new novel study called “A Boy Called Bat”. It should be a quick read, and if I happen to find a copy online, I’ll email it out.

Students just finished writing descriptive paragraphs about winter to accompany our Barbara Reid plasticine art projects. We have also focused on writing paragraphs that include a topic sentence, 3-5 supporting details, and a concluding sentence.

Math

We are currently working on three-digit subtraction, with regrouping. Students just completed a variety of riddles, and next they will move on to word problems, with both subtraction and addition. We should wrap this up in the next week or so, and if time permits, we will re-visit multiplication strategies right before springbreak.

We will also had our March fact frenzy yesterday we and this should have all come home to you last night for your signature and review. Thank you for continuing to practice basic facts at home. Your child is still receiving 60 facts for addition, subtraction, and multiplication, and they have 10 minutes to complete each section. I have attached another copy of the fact frenzy here in case you want to practice them more at home.

Science

We are currently working through our Animal Life Cycles unit. Thus far, students have learned characteristics about mammals and reptiles, and the differences and similarities between each. Last week we had a visit from a bearded dragon lizard! We will also look at life cycles for birds, insects, fish, and amphibians. This will tie in nicely to our zoo fieldtrip on April 7th.

Social Studies

We wrapped up our country study on Peru and will celebrate by creating mini woven Peruvian rugs as an art project. We will move on to look at the Ukraine, its traditions and cultures, including pysanky eggs and nesting dolls. If you have any unique Ukrainian artifacts at home that your child could share with the class, let me know!

Thanks and have a great rest of your week.
